Outdoor Climbing in Jordan

Brief

One of our missions as a federation is to support access to outdoor climbing areas in Jordan, maintain routes and crags, and further promote ecological sustainable practices. The main and largest hubs of outdoor climbing in Jordan comprise Ajloun in the north and Wadi Rum in the south, however there are numerous other areas and crags off the beaten path that offer great opportunities for adventure.

Jordan offers a diverse combination of climbing, from bouldering and adventure climbing in the Jordan Valley canyons, sport climbing in the north, to traditional climbing in Wadi Rum. In fact, Rum is a unique secluded destination featuring ancient red deserts and rocky sandstone mountains situated in the south of Jordan. Here, climbers have the luxury of exploring the unique features and grandeur of a mystical landscape and experiencing climbing at its best.

Furthermore, Jordan boasts a wide variety of rock formations, most prominently sandstone and granite in the south and limestone in the north.

*Disclaimer* It must be noted that rock climbing is inherently a dangerous sport. Ultimately, the responsibility falls on the climber. We, as JCF, are therefore not liable for any accidents that may befall a climber.

Outdoor Climbing Announcements & Updates

There are a couple of guidebooks published by Tony Howard and Di Taylor for Wadi Rum and Ajloun areas:

Treks and Climbs in Wadi Rum, Jordan

Walks, Treks, Climbs & Caves, Al Ayoun, North Jordan

These guidebooks are somewhat outdated and do not include most of the popular sport crags or any of the new routes or areas that have been developed. Until a comprehensive rock climbing guidebook is made (currently under development), we encourage you to seek information online. There is a good amount of information and topos of the different areas that can be found at TheCrag.com, as well as some stand alone guides for areas and routes, usually shared online by route developers.
